The Higher Education Act, signed 50 years ago at Texas State University, made a college education attainable for thousands of lower- and middle-income students who might never have considered this possibility. Pell Grants, work-study, low-interest student loans, the National Teachers Corps, Title IX and more became a part of the act that we now take for granted. Inspired by President Lyndon B. Johnson’s experiences in Cotulla, Texas, and at Texas State University, this legislation became central to the legacies of our institution, Texas and the United States. Learn more
